NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE NORTH STAR ACADEMY OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 14th, 2026
Happy Monday team!
Big weekend for the team! Congrats to Makhi on a stellar performance, and to Gianna for defending her title. Both athletes stepped into the ring on the big stage at Freedom Fighter Promotions this past Saturday. Makhi put in a solid five round effort against the champ and was unfortunately edged out, but earned a ton of fans and has cemented himself at the top despite such limited experience.
Gianna set a crazy pace over the five round stretch, taking the opportunity to showcase and work out some new skills and dynamics in her game. It was a very dominant one sided victory en route to the title defense.
The competition team returns to action in Mid October with a run at the WBC North American Tournament in Maryland!
We’re back to a regular schedule this week. I want to re-iterate some slight schedule changes that have gone into effect earlier this Month.
- Wednesday 7:30pm grappling returns to “No Gi” — our wrestling classes will be held only on the 1st Wednesday of every month. All other Wednesdays will follow our No Gi programming.
- Friday 7:15pm grappling is now “No Gi” — this class mirrors our Monday and Wednesday no gi classes and is open to all grappling students.
Lastly, we have a guest Judo coach coming in on Tuesday, September 22nd, for a special workshop! Kyle Vashkulat is a member of the 2012 US Judo Olympic Team and will host a special class on Tuesday, September 22nd, in place of our regular gi class.
Coach Kyle will cut right to the point with an introductory series to stand up gi work, with an emphasis on grip fighting and positioning. This class is free to all members (you need a gi obviously) and all experience levels! We’ll have some additional information soon, stay posted to our socials.
See you on the mats!
