WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE YOU
The North Star Academy was founded in 2017, after a decade and a half of competition, training, and discovery. We have built one of Philadelphia’s premiere martial arts communities and it is our pleasure to welcome you to the team!
The technical mastery of our coaches is just a small fraction of what makes this place special. Truth be told, the power of the team is built on the power of each team member, and we look forward to your contribution.
In order to maintain our standards of technical skill, professionalism, and conduct, we ask that you familiarize yourself with our policies here so that our time on the mats can be as productive, safe, and fun as possible.
As always, if you have any questions that are not answered here, or simply would like some clarification, do not hesitate to reach out by phone/text (215 848 5454) or e-mail ([email protected]).
We’ll see you on the mats!
STUDENT CONDUCT
To maintain an environment where everyone is safe to train hard and push their limits, it’s important that we understand how to properly relate to each other both on and off the mats.
Building training relationships is one of the most important things you can do. At times, you will be partnered with someone who is more experienced than you.
And, at times, you will be partnered with someone less experienced than you.
Here are some guidelines to make your training as productive as possible.
- Please refrain from “side coaching” or offering too much advice unless it’s requested. It is the coach’s job to teach.
- For live drills, safety first. That means not punching above your weight class, and also not dominating the round. Unless the specific goal of the drill is competitive, hard training, each partner should get something out of it.
- Absolutely refrain from any inappropriate comments or contact. If your partner is making you feel uncomfortable, tell a coach immediately!
- You are not obligated to work with anyone/everyone. You can refuse a partner for any reason at any time.
Maintaining an environment where we all feel safe pushing our limits is incredibly important. As such, please respect the boundaries of your training partners and coaches.
This includes:
- Avoid unsolicited contact outside of the gym (DMs, texting, etc).
- Keep political and religious comments and opinions to yourself. Let’s focus on things we have in common, not things we don’t.
- Avoid “tap and talk” conversations — try not to brag about how you performed against other students in sparring, drills, etc. It can be difficult to keep to yourself but we want to save the competition for the actual arena, not the practice mats. If you want to compete, speak with a coach!
- Finding a small group and community within the academy is encouraged; being exclusive, petty, or disagreeable is not.
- Please keep all membership and admin related questions off the mats. When a coach is teaching, let them focus on teaching. It can wait for an email or a chat at the desk.
- Coaches are here to help, but we are not therapists, philosophers, or spirit guides. And besides, why would you want to take life advice from someone who gets punched, slammed, and choked for a living? 🙂
Tuition is due when it’s due, and it is your responsibility to abide by all billing and tuition policies as outlined in the student agreement/contract that is signed upon enrollment.
Tuition is due whether you attend class or not. There are no refunds or pro-rata options available.
Your failure to plan does not constitute an emergency on our end.
Our billing policies are direct and fair, and — more importantly — up front and transparent.
The best way to resolve any billing issues is to contact the front desk and maintain a dialogue. We are here to help you, first and foremost.
The most important thing is to simply have fun!
Comparing yourself to others, or setting unrealistic goals for yourself will only ever end in frustration.
Training alongside elite athletes has its perks, but don’t forget — if you’re not training like an elite athlete, you won’t have the skills of an elite athlete. And that’s fine.
We are all on our own, personal journeys. Focus on consistency, gratitude, and maintain a long-term outlook.
There is more to learn than can be achieved in any one lifetime, so just have fun and stay curious and everything will fall into place!
HYGIENE — CLEAN IS SAFE AND SAFE IS CLEAN
All students must follow our hygiene and gear guidelines, without exception. A clean gym is a safe gym.
- Shower before and after training
- Keep all nails trimmed and filed (long or fake nails may exclude you from participating in certain activities)
- Use deodorant, mouthwash, and whatever else is required to present an odor free presence
- All gear must be clean and maintained
- All apparel must be clean and washed prior to uses, including Jiu Jitsu gis
- No bare feet off the mats ANYWHERE
- No shoes on the mats ANYWHERE
- Wash hands before training and after bathroom use
- Don’t be the dirty, smelly, and gross person. People will avoid you, and you will find it difficult to find partners to train with.
No shoes on the mats, and no bare feet off the mats. Literally. Please step in and out of your shoes at the edge of the mats and avoid cross-contamination between the floor and the training area.
STUDENTS WHO STEP OFF THE MAT WITH BARE FEET MAY BE UNABLE TO RETURN TO THE MATS THAT DAY. THIS IS A SERIOUS INFRACTION.
Whenever possible, please shower before class. And always, ALWAYS, shower immediately after class. These two simple actions can prevent the majority of all hygiene related issues.
One of the greatest benefits to training at the academy is access to a wide range of experienced and helpful partners. Coming to class with foul odors can make it difficult for people to want to work with you, and that will have an immediate negative impact on your progress. Please use deodorant and any other measures to mitigate body odor, bad breath, etc. Be the training partner you’d want to work with!
All apparel must be cleaned and washed between uses, including your gi.
Allow striking gear (gloves and shinguards) to fully dry after each class. DO NOT pack wet gear into a bag.
Gear that is functional, but carries a foul odor, will be considered “broken” and not allowed in class. Period.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Get answers to the most common questions!
Students are welcome to attend any class on the schedule for which they have the proper equipment and experience — and, in some cases, explicit permission from the coaching staff (sparring, competition team training, etc.) Please refer to the specific equipment and experience guide in this FAQ for more detailed information on what each class’s requirements are.
That is to say, there is no numerical limit to the classes you can attend at the academy, but you may be restricted from attending certain classes if you do not possess the proper equipment (for example, gloves and shinpads for striking) or the proper experience (201 and 301 classes require additional experience).
Please note that in addition to all the specific equipment/apparel requirements, all gear/apparel must be clean and free of odor or serious wear and tear. Poor grade equipment can be a safety hazard to you and your training partners, and equipment with lingering odor can spread harmful disease like MRSA, ringworm, impetigo, mat herpes, and a host of other terrible and super gross things. Don’t be gross!
Please consult our equipment guide above for specific gear requirements for each type of class.
Of course! We are all adults, and we all have challenges and obstacles that pop up from time to time. However, showing up on time ready to go is always appreciated.
Our class schedule is available on the main site — click the menu icon and select “schedule.”
Additionally, you can download the MyStudio App (use the studio code “2158485454”) which is handy for checking class times as well.
Absolutely not.
