FLUENCY
WEEK OF 11/9/2026
Ever had this experience? You’ve been training for awhile, and one day you hear a new perspective or cue that finally clicks, and you finally make a much needed adjustment to a skill you’ve been working on.
Sound familiar?
If you’ve been training long enough, this probably has happened. If not — it will, soon.
Here’s the thing, though. As a coach, I have a bag of tricks that’s pretty much in rotation at all time. It’s a pretty big bag, and there’s a lot in there.
But from my perspective, I say the same things over and over and over again, until one day it clicks for someone. And more often than not, their response is “why didn’t you say that sooner?” 🙂
I get it though. I’ve travelled a bit in my life, and I’ve had the privilege of visiting a lot of Spanish speaking areas. Over the years my Spanish has improved, and what initially sounded like gibberish now has meaning.
It’s not that we’re not hearing the words themselves, but it takes time to develop the fluency to recognize what those words actually mean. What’s tricky here is that these words are in our spoken language. We understand their objective meaning, after all this is the language we use every single day!
But when we start training, we often lack the literacy and fluency to understand the meaning of these words as it relates to how we progress in the art.
So what’s the point? Well, it takes time, but with immersion and practice you will find a lot of additional meaning in the stuff you’ve been hearing since day one. In fact, the day one stuff is probably the most important stuff out there! Seek fluency, and from there progress and understanding will follow.
