FOCAL LENGTH
WEEK OF 6/29/26
Sometimes, things can be right in front of your face, yet be completely invisible. Perhaps they’re obscured by something else. Perhaps they’re just out of focus.
That’s why, as you grow in combat sports, you regularly say to yourself “I can’t believe I didn’t see that — it was so obvious! It was right there in front of me the whole time!”
But it’s not obvious. At least, not initially. But it was right there all along.
Growth is not just the accumulation of techniques, but the gaining of perspective. New experiences and new challenges create new ways of looking at the world. From new perspectives we can see the formerly invisible answers that were in front of us the entire time.
That’s why it’s important to challenge your beliefs, try new things, and take in new ideas and perspectives. Sometimes just taking a small shift to the side in one direction puts you in the right position to solve the problem in front of you.
Plateaus only exist if you stay there.
