DON’T LET IT GET EASIER
WEEK OF 6/1/26
Don’t let it get easier. That’s it. That’s all of it, really.
We spend so much time early in our martial arts journey just trying to get some sense of control and familiarity with the training. Every day is an uphill climb, but eventually we reach some level ground.
It’s self-deluding to call this a plateau, simply because the climb continues ahead of you, higher and higher as far as the eye can see.
But many people like to camp out here. It’s safe. It’s stable. They’ve reached the first level ground, and the prospect of continuing the climb — as opposed to enjoying the view from where they’re at — is intimidating.
So they make things easy.
Sure, they work hard. But working hard, and doing the hard work, are two separate things.
Hard work can be easy if it’s familiar and you’re good at it.
Doing the hard work is never easy, by definition. It means getting outside of your comfort zone, and accepting that there is always more to do, more challenges to face head on, and more obstacles to overcome.
Don’t let it get easier. Do the hard work, always.
