News and updates from North Star MMA in Philadelphia
Happy Monday Team!
We are fresh off a long and productive competitive weekend with both our Jiu Jitsu team and our Striking Team putting in the work.
On Saturday, we participated in the Tap Cancer Out Charity Tournament in Hatfield, PA. The level of competition was actually pretty high considering the local nature of the event, and everyone got some really tough matches in. Big congrats to Kelsey O’Brien, Dashaun Kimp, and Ryan DeRobertis for their gold medal finishes!
Yesterday we headed over to a sister school in South Philadelphia for a sparring exhibition — Joe Angelo, Bill Kirner, Ken Hernandez, Nilson Martinez, and Renee Johnson all strapped on the gloves and went the distance in their respective bouts. These events are primarily about stress testing the athletes’ skillsets and we came back with a lot to work on (and a lot to applaud).
Thank you to everyone who showed up to support and help out this weekend! It was definitely a big endeavor but we made it through and looked pretty good doing it 🙂
Next, I just want to give a quick reminder on some upcoming events this week!
On Wednesday, our regularly scheduled Striking 101 and Striking 201 classes will be replaced with the 101 Seminar Series: Leg Kick Dilemmas. I have worked this system effectively in competition throughout my fighting career (back when Myspace and Blackberrys were king) and have since taught it to a number of my students who have utilized it to great success as well.
This seminar will run from 6pm – 7:30pm and is open to all North Star Students! Gloves and shinpads/shinguards are required.
Next up, Coach Tre returns to the ring at Gut Check Fighting Championships this Saturday in Newark, Delaware! Tre is challenging for the 115lb strap and is looking sharp and ready to go! Make sure to grab your tickets in person ASAP as we are quickly getting to the finish line!
I’ll reach out later this week with a full Thanksgiving Holiday schedule for you all, but in short we will be hosting afternoon open mats/classes on Thanksgiving and Black Friday and running adjusted schedules on Wednesday and Saturday.
See you on the mats!
