UPDATES FROM THE NORTH STAR MMA ACADEMY IN PHILADELPHIA
Happy Monday Team!
Hard to believe we’re already in Spooky Season, aka October!
It’s my favorite time of the month (largely due to Halloween and a much-needed break from the hot weather), and also one of my favorite times on the mats. People are back from their Summer shenanigans, the weather is great, and we are all focused on leveling up our skills.
We’re adding some small changes to the programming here — you’ll notice that our Striking 101 program now has a Spotlight Skill. We’ll be emphasizing the mechanics of different skills throughout the Striking 101 rotation, starting with straight punches this week!
Additionally, our Tuesday Slamboree series is extending into the striking world. On the last Tuesday of each month, we’ll be formally testing students into both the 201 and 301 level programs. Stay posted for more information — and please note that October’s Slamboree is punted forward a week to 10/24 so as to not interfere with Halloween!
In the meantime, make sure to secure the proper equipment if you plan on testing and moving up to the next level. 201 level classes require sparring grade shinguards and kneepads, and 301 level classes require 16oz+ size sparring grade gloves and a mouthguard. See a coach for more details on the equipment.
“Sparring Grade” denotes a level of quality and durability in the gear that makes it appropriate for full-contact drills. Generally speaking, inexpensive gear is not sparring grade, so check with a coach before picking up shinguards or gloves if they are below $50.
Beyond that, we are stoked for our very own Gianna Vadino to represent the US as she travels to Germany this month for the ISKA World Championships! Limited fundraising t-shirts remain. If you missed the boat on the fundraising gear, you can still be a key element in her preparation by getting on the mats and making sure every day of training is productive.
I’ll see you there!
