MEMORIAL DAY
WEEK OF 5/25/26
Much more than just a “three day weekend,” Memorial Day stands out in the national holidays as a sobering reminder of the cost of freedom, change, and prosperity.
In many ways our paths through martial arts are no different. We must make profound sacrifices in order to achieve the prosperity we aspire to have.
And, often, we hesitate to make those sacrifices because the cost is so high. But in the present it’s easy to feel the sharp, instant pain of sacrifice — and difficult to imagine the chronic, throbbing pain of regret as we think back to how we could have worked a little bit harder to make our then current selves happier, healthier, and better positioned.
The sacrifices are made now, or they can be made later with interest applied.
The solution then isn’t to necessarily avoid sacrifice, but to understand that for everything that’s given, something is gained. And for everything that’s kept, something is lost.
