NOBODY IS COMING TO FIX YOU
WEEK OF 9/29/25
That’s it. That’s the big insight: nobody is coming to fix you.
Your coach? They can give you cues and direction. Your teammates? They can give you encouragement. Your family? They can give you support.
But nobody can “turn the wrench” and solve whatever problems you are working to fix.
Need a better diet? That’s on you.
Need better time management skills? That’s on you.
Need to stop leaning so much when you throw a punch? That’s on you.
The #1 impediment to progress that I see in students (and myself) is a tendency to think that we are more advanced than we are, that circling back to the fundamentals is somehow too rudimentary for us, and that the solutions to our problems are hidden behind locks that are too complex and nuanced for basic keys. Spoiler alert: they aren’t.
Now, this isn’t to say that it can’t — and shouldn’t — be a team effort. The entire idea of “picking yourself up by your bootstraps” is an absurd and impossible one (i.e. you can’t lift yourself off the ground). We all need support: people to lean on and occasionally people to lift us up. However, when it comes time to make the actual, important changes, that’s on us.
Nobody is coming to fix you. They are coming to support, encourage, motivate, and guide — but they are not coming to fix you.
The moment you take ownership of your progress is the moment you free yourself from the bindings of misguided constraints.
