SIGH OR SHRUG
WEEK OF 8/18/25
It’s always something, isn’t it?
The other day, we had a few leaks pop up in our brand new roof here at the church. Little ones, but alarming nonetheless. Not cool!
I’ve been down this road before. Screws come loose, a handle pops out of place, a leak opens up. It’s always something.
But that’s the thing. It’s always something, so we can either sigh in self pity, or shrug and get to work on a solution.
Life is the art of building a castle made out of playing cards during a wind storm. Moments of stability are few and far between, and we spend most of our time maintaining or repairing the structure. Because, well, it’s always something, isn’t it?
Those who sigh in self pity often get left behind. The hits don’t stop just because you do, so before you know it you’re way behind the status quo and the immensity of the work in front of you can be paralyzing. That feedback loop is brutal and can derail you from your goals, whatever they are. These detours can cost you many happy and successful years sometimes.
But those who shrug and accept that most of the stable things in their life require maintenance and repair are able to keep up with it.
And, with the right attitude, we can even make progress. So shrug it off, lean into the winds a bit, and keep your toolbelt handy. Because it will all fall apart. Over, and over, and over again. But somewhere in these tasks is the craft and trade of living a successful life.
