NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE NORTH STAR ACADEMY OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

WEEK OF MARCH 3rd, 2025

 

Happy Monday Team!

Spring is just around the corner!  Last week was a nice reminder that it won’t always be overcast, cold, and bitter.  The cooler months of April and May are some of the best here at the academy with the doors and windows open and tons of light.  I can’t wait!  Sadly, it will be our last spring at 5904 Greene St but we are moving on to bigger and much better things!

Speaking of big things — we have a couple events in the pipeline that I am really excited to announce!

First, join us on Saturday, March 15th for a screening of UFC Fight Night 254: Vettori vs. Dolidze!  We will be showing the fights on our large projector screen with the audio running through the sound system.  This event is free and open to all North Star Members and friends.  You are welcome to bring food and a lawn chair, but you must also bring a towel to protect the mats from both.  Doors open at 5pm and the main card starts at 7pm.

Second, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5th.  Renowned internet coach and world champion Jon Thomas will be at North Star MMA for a passing workshop focusing on the long step and torreando passes.  The seminar kicks off at 11:30am and will be $70 per person — you can pre-register at the front desk with cash, PayPal, or Venmo only (all proceeds are going to Jon, so we are not able to accommodate house charges).  Details subject to change by the way but the date is set!

I am particularly eager to have Jon out as he is one of my personal favorite voices in the Jiu Jitsu world and brings a concept oriented approach to training.  Most seminars leave you with a few moves that can be strung together, but this workshop will give you a new perspective on passing and allow you to upgrade your mainframe a bit.  Do not miss it!

Beyond that, we are stoked to have Gianna Vadino return to action at the USA Muay Thai Nationals on March 15th as well.  Gianna will be competing against some of the best women in the country in a stacked A-Class division.  If and when streaming options become available we will let you know!
