THE RED CORNER
NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE NORTH STAR ACADEMY OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
WEEK OF JUNE 17th, 2024
Happy Monday Team!
Not a super busy week off the mats — we are in full swing here at the academy for the Summer and just finished our first full week of morning classes. I was extremely happy to see such a great turnout for our early sessions and I’m looking forward to building that part of our program out as 2024 matures.
For those that may have missed the memo, we have 9am Striking 101 classes and 10am Jiu Jitsu (all levels) classes on Mondays and Thursdays. Our morning BJJ cycle is nogi on Monday and gi on Thursday, as it mirrors our evening cycle. Morning sessions are open to all student so come by!
Additionally, the gym is open for any open mat training during that period (roughly 8:30am – 11:30am on Mondays and Thursdays) so feel free to just come and do your own thing if you like. We’ll be there!
This upcoming week does appear to bring some serious challenges with it, though — we will be experiencing some potentially record breaking heat the entire week. It is extremely important for you to remain hydrated throughout the day. We often don’t realize how dehydrated we are until we begin strenuous activity, and at that point it’s too late. Make a concerted effort this week to remain mindful of your hydration levels, and take it easy in class if you are feeling sub par.
Lastly, we will be saying goodbye this month to a long time coach and contributor to the academy — Larry Thi. Larry is moving on to new opportunities and new digs in the area and will be teaching his last official class on Saturday, June 29th.
However, we have designated Wednesday the 26th as “Larrypalooza” and coach Larry will lead our 201 class and share his expertise, perspective, and favorite drills with everyone. Make sure to catch up with coach Larry over the next two weeks and continue to keep in touch!
For those of us who have been around for awhile, we know it’s never a hard “goodbye” but more of a “see you later” in this small community and there will be opportunities in the future to see Larry on the mats, I’m sure of it!
I look forward to seeing everyone in the gym this week (in a hydrated state) to continue plugging away. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday yesterday and is ready to work hard!
