THE RED CORNER: NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE NORTH STAR ACADEMY
WEEK OF 04.08.24
Happy Monday Team!
This past weekend we participated in the first USA Muay Thai East Coast National Championship tournament just a stone’s throw away in Delaware.
Traditionally, there has only been one major tournament on the East Coast every year: the WKA Nationals. In 2024 we have three! USA Muay Thai, ISKA, and WKA! This just points to how much the sport is growing in the US. It’s an exciting time to be in the community.
Joe Angelo and Bill Kirner both went 1-1 on the event. At this stage in their careers, the most important goal is just to accumulate “rounds.” Spend time in the ring, work on your composure, tweak your skills. We never want to accept a loss (and ask any veteran fighter and they’ll tell you they could/should have won every fight they lost, it’s just how it goes) but the cruel reality is that 50% of all competitors lose on fight day. That’s just how it is.
Regardless, the experience and wisdom you acquire from being in the ring cannot be purchased or bought or earned in any other way. It’s expensive, and that’s why it’s so valuable. With any competition you just take the lessons back to the training room and build on them.
We have some fun competitive events on deck over the next few weeks! For Jiu Jitsu, Isis Toledo is competing in back-to-back grappling matches at Arena Grappling as well as the Place of Peace Invitational on the 13th and 20th. We also have a small crew competing at the Grappling Industries tournament in Broomall on the 20th.
On the first weekend of May we have a few athletes competing at the ISKA Nationals in Delaware, and the following weekend Gianna defends her Warrior’s Cup Title against one of New York’s premiere Nak Muay Yings.
Super, super busy!
Not to mention the day to day grind in the gym.
REMINDER: Our Seminar 101 Series returns THIS THURSDAY with a Pad Holding workshop with Coach Larry. This workshop starts at 7:30pm and is open to all North Star Members. Want to be the coolest, most popular kid on the mats? Be the best pad holder. This is your opportunity!
Appreciate all the support this past weekend. Keep up the great work everyone and I’ll see you on the mats!
