At the Olympic level, athletes have a massive team working behind the scenes to ensure that their training, time management, and recovery are fully optimized. These athletes also train and compete full time and often have difficult decisions about where to invest their limited resources of availability and energy.
At that level, by all means the act of optimization is not only useful, it’s essential.
And even at more recreational levels, having a well optimized training and recovery routine will give you more juice for the squeeze.
But as a coach, I often encounter people worrying too much about the optimization of their training, and too little about the more important things like consistency and volume.
For 99% of non competitors, simply showing up and training more than your optimized teammates will give you better results over time. Why? Because mat time matters. It is essential and cannot be removed from the equation.
I encourage you all to relentlessly study, plan, and review your training and progress — but make sure you understand that these actions are secondary to doing the actual heavy lifting of getting on the mats, training, eating well, and getting good sleep.
The most lethal skill a martial artist can have is persistence. Invest into your ability to stay consistent and work hard an you will find the rest will sort itself out over time! |
