Quick one for you today!
We often think of mastery as being a destination at the end of a long path. And, in some ways, it is.
But mastery is more a process of calibration than it is a journey towards a spot marked off on a map. As such, we will overshoot and undershoot the ideal in a neverending process of dialing in.
Initially, the variations will be large — we will overshoot and undershoot by large margins.
But as we dial in over time, this rhythm will smooth out and we will waver closer and closer to our goal.
This is important to understand because at an intermediate and advanced level, our rhythm will take us to and then beyond the ideal, meaning we may have periods where we feel like we are getting worse. And, if we don’t look at our journey from above, we may only see the downward trend of our training.
Inevitably, though, we find our way back to that center line.
And, inevitably, we find our way away from it.
But, with each revolution we stay closer and closer to it.
That is the process of mastery.
So if you find yourself at a plateau, or even find yourself “getting worse,” simply keep at it. You are due for a break through!
