Striking 101: Elbow Strikes
Muay Thai is known as the “Art of the 8 Limbs,” referring to the eight striking points utilized in combat:
- Both Hands
- Both Elbows
- Both Knees
- Both Shins/Feet
In order to streamline our training process, we’ve assigned a number system to our elbows. This allows us to call out long combinations with clarity, ease, and speed.
Below are the four basic elbow strikes, #11 – #14. Familiarize yourself with the number system as soon as possible–it will make your training much easier!
Also note the presence of Power Movements #1 and #2 in these techniques.
Your Elbow System Cheat Sheet is as follows:
- Lead Jab
- Rear Cross
- Lead Hook
- Rear Uppercut
- Lead Uppercut
- Rear Hook
- Lead Shovel Punch
- Rear Body Hook
- Lead Body Jab
- Rear Body Cross
- Lead Slashing Elbow
- Rear Slashing Elbow
- Lead Stabbing Elbow
- Rear Stabbing Elbow
- Lead Downward Elbow
- Spinning Rear Elbow
- Lead Rising Elbow
- Rear Tomahawk Elbow
- Lead Lateral Elbow
- Rear Flying Elbow
You’ll notice that all odd numbers are lead side attacks, and all even numbers are rear side attacks. This theme continues through our elbow strikes as well!
